What is Grounding?

Grounding, or earthing, is the practice of connecting ones body with the Earth by touching skin to a natural conductive surface. This can be material such as natural water sources (the ocean, lakes, rivers, ect), grass, the ground, rocks, or any natural organic material.

Grounding has a plethora of benefits such as:

-Reducing Inflammation
-Improved Blood Circulation
-Cardiovascular Health
-Reduction of all forms of Pain
-Reduction of Stress
-Better, more restful Sleep
-More natural Energy
-Normalizing biological rhythms including the circadian rhythm
-Shortens recovery time from injury and speeds up Healing
-Supports adrenal health
-and so much more

Whats the Big Deal?

Grounding is important because it is a vital component of well being that we as Humans have lived by since the Dawn of Mankind. Over thousands of years of human evolution, being connected to the Earth was a normal part of every day life. Only until a few generations ago, with the rise of modern civilization, new technologies, and vast Cities, we have been severely disconnected from the Earth. Most of us don't walk barefoot or sleep on the ground as we did in times past. We walk in shoes with rubber plastic bottoms, we live in insulated houses, and we are surrounded by asphalt and artificial flooring. If we live in a big city – its even worse.

Even though we may intuitively sense that we feel better by walking barefoot or sleep on the ground –
Most of the population is permanently isolated from the Earth's electrical influences.

The Science Behind It

When a person is in bare-footed contact with the Earth, free electrons (negative ions) are conducted onto the skin surface and into the body via the mucus membranes of the digestive and respiratory systems. This in turn neutralizes the overflow of free radicals and inflammatory damages. When we have an over-abundance of Free Radicals, which are charged with +Positive Ions, it can lead to chronic diseases and faster aging. Over-accumulation of Positive Ions leads to stress, disease, decomposition, and death. Negative ions, on the other hand, are a huge source of happiness, health, and well being. Negative ions also increase the flow of oxygen to the brain; resulting in higher alertness, more mental energy, and decreased drowsiness.
Ever feel the freshness in the air and happiness that comes after a rainy day? This is because negative ions are circulated into the environment brought by the rain. Thunderstorms and rain clouds also have this effect.

There is also much evidence supporting how Earthing improves blood viscosity (blood thickness). Research has shown that when we are grounding, our zeta potential quickly rises, which means our red blood cells have more charge on their surface. This forces the red blood cells to push away from each other, thus thinning the blood, dropping blood pressure, and allowing it to flow smoother. This has huge implications for those with heart problems, diabetes, or dementia, as the charged blood cells are less inclined to stick together and form a clot – which is a huge factor in these diseases.

Other Research has shown has shown that earthing the human body during sleep normalizes circadian secretion levels of cortisol (the stress hormone), reduces pain, inflammation, and improves sleep. When we plant our bare skin onto the Earth, we come into alignment with our natural rhythms, and helps maintain us to the same electrical current of our Planet – and thus all life.

Action Steps

By adding a morning or daily ritual every day of Earthing, one can notice profound improvements in all areas of ones life.

  1. A simple morning practice of planting your feet onto the Earth while reading, meditating, or eating breakfast can have profound effects. Do it for 15 minutes to an hour. This practice can be implemented in the afternoon or night if that’s easiest for you.
  2. Going on a walk, barefoot. I often recommend to my clients that when they are stressed or overwhelmed with emotions, go take a barefoot walk for an hour. 9 times out of 10 they come back a changed person.
  3. Become aware of your surroundings and take note where the natural environments are. Devote time to go there and recharge as often as you can.

The best places to ground is the ocean, wet sand, morning dew-wet grass, lakes and rivers, rocks, or the bare earth. If living in a city where natural resources are limited, concrete will work as long as it hasn't been painted or has an artificial coating. Most concrete is made up of granite and limestone, which is efficient for conducting energy from the Earth.
Its time to stop what your doing, get outside, throw your shoes off, and connect to the Earth!
